The people and wildlife of the arctic have developed unique and powerful solutions to the challenges of thriving in an extreme environment. IAB seeks to understand and apply those solutions in ways that can directly improve human health. Researchers in the Center for Alaska Native Health Research build upon and reinforce Alaska’s cultural strengths to develop and test sustainable health solutions supporting mental health and chronic disease prevention. Researchers in the Center for Transformative Research in Metabolism conduct basic and translational research aimed at finding novel approaches to critical care that leverage the unique physiology and metabolic protection of arctic hibernators. The Alaska INBRE program connects and supports researchers across Alaska to build and sustain Alaska’s biomedical and behavioral health infrastructure.
