Media Visits
Toolik Field Station welcomes visits from writers and other media professionals who are interested in sharing the station's science and associated ecology, natural history, and other activities.
We can help with your visit or inquiry. Whether you need a response on a breaking story, a scientist to interview as an expert source or are looking for story ideas, our management team is available to assist members of the media.

Opportunities for writers to visit Toolik Field Station fall under our artist programs, including our artist-in-residence program and self-funded visits. See our Art at Toolik webpage for more information.
We welcome journalists and other mass media professionals to visit the station to report on Toolik science and operations. Journalists must pay for their travel and user days, and establish a media project in before arriving to the station. Depending on availability and travel day, you may be able to take our free shuttle to the station from Fairbanks, AK.
Additionally, interviews with researchers, station personnel, and other station residents must be scheduled in advance.

We can serve as a base for scientific and educational photography and filming, including documentaries, photo features, and books. Contact us at iab-uaf-toolik@alaska.edu to get started on planning your visit.
All photography and film projects must pay for their travel and user days, and establish a media project in before arriving to the station.
Depending on your shooting locales and the nature of the project, you may need permits with the associated land management agency to film. Find more information on our permit webpage.
All photography and videography on Toolik Field Station property that are managed by commercial production companies (e.g, non-news TV programs, educational programs, documentary or feature films) need a location agreement and on-camera releases established with the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø before starting. Depending on the nature of the program and the shoot, a location fee and location manager (usually someone from Toolik Field Station or UAF University Relations) may be required. The agreements are managed through UAF's public affairs office. Production companies should allow at least a week to negotiate and finalize location agreements.
No written agreements are required for shoots managed by news media, though personnel should make prior arrangements with us to visit the station (see Journalists & Mass Media Professionals tab.
Individuals who are current residents/visitors at Toolik may shoot for personal use or social sharing as long as it is legal and doesn't violate regulations from the associated land management agencies.
