Accommodation process

The accommodation process varies depending on the type of accommodation being requested. Many are managed by offices outside of ORCA, but we can assist in making a referral.

Summary of procedures

Recognition: The need for accommodation is identified (either through a request from the individual or through observations by the department) and the need is reported to the appropriate office.

Interactive process: An ongoing conversation occurs in which the individual in need of accommodation, the department, and the accommodation office discuss what modifications would be reasonable. This is an individualized process that takes into account the essential functions of the job or fundamental requirements of the program.

Determination: The accommodation office will determine what, if any, reasonable accommodations will be put in place.

Implementation (for granted accommodations): The department is obligated to implement the accommodation determination. Failure to do so may result in a discrimination inquiry and/or investigation.

Appeal: The requesting individual will have an opportunity to appeal the determination of the accommodation office. The department does not have a right of appeal, but may express concerns to the accommodation office and request modifications to the determination.
