Arctic Vent Hood
Technology Summary
The Arctic Vent Hood is an energy-efficient exterior ventilation termination unit specifically engineered for extreme cold climates. Designed to prevent backdrafts, ice buildup, and severe heat loss, the vent hood features a specialized damper mechanism and thermal break seal that protects residential and commercial building envelopes in sub-zero environments without compromising exhaust performance.
Background & Opportunity
Standard exterior exhaust vent hoods for kitchen ranges, clothes dryers, and HRV/ERV systems are susceptible to freezing shut, leaking cold air, and forming destructive ice dams in northern climates. Conventional dampers often allow cold drafts to enter the building envelope, causing localized condensation, frost accumulation, and significant heating energy loss. There is a strong need for an airtight, freeze-resistant exterior vent termination optimized for high thermal efficiency in arctic and cold-climate construction.
How It Works
The Arctic Vent Hood incorporates a gravity-assisted or spring-loaded insulated damper housed within a thermally broken exterior casing. When exhaust fans run, air pressure smoothly opens the seal to discharge moisture and air. Once airflow stops, the damper drops tightly back against a soft, non-freezing gasket, forming an airtight seal that prevents cold air infiltration, frost bridging, and reverse stack effect.
Potential Applications
- High-Performance Arctic Housing: Residential kitchen, bath, and dryer exhaust terminations for Net-Zero and super-insulated cold-climate homes.
- Commercial & Institutional Facilities: Energy-efficient ventilation caps for schools, municipal buildings, and remote Arctic research facilities.
- Retrofit & Weatherization Programs: Upgrade component for energy efficiency retrofits aimed at reducing heating costs in cold regions.
