Duo MFA Phone Call Authentication is Being Removed - Introducing Verified Push
October 13, 2025
On Thursday, December 18, 2025, University of Alaska will continue roll-out of changes intended to improve the security of our multi-factor authentication security. In response to increased threats to UA login credentials and university services, UA will be requiring for all Duo Mobile app users and will also be removing the option.
These changes will also be required for those who are not currently using the Duo Mobile app.
During October, November and early December, groups within the UA community will receive email notifications letting them know about the timing of the changes to UA accounts.
Changes Coming to UA Multi-factor Authentication (Duo) Service in Fall 2025
To increase security at University of Alaska, one method of authenticating is being discontinued and another method is changing:
- Having Duo call you when you want to log in–
, or Callback, is when your login causes Duo to call a telephone number and ask you to confirm your login request. This option has been discovered to be insecure as well as incredibly unreliable during authentication. - Accounts that are not already using Duo Verified Push when using the Duo Mobile app will have it required.
Instead of seeing a green checkmark (or red X) in your Duo Mobile app, you’ll be prompted to enter a three-digit code. When you log in, if it does not already do so, the Duo prompt in your browser will provide a three-digit code that you will enter in the Duo Mobile app on your phone to verify. This is called Duo Verified Push, and it is the most secure way to use Duo at University of Alaska.
