This month, the UAF Staff Council Rural Affairs Committee, in collaboration with Northwest ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø of Indigenous Studies, would like to honor Sue Luke, a remarkable and dedicated staff member who has retired after an impressive 37 years at Northwest ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.

Sue began her journey with Northwest ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø in 1987 as a part-time accounts clerk. Over the years, she took on increased responsibilities and ultimately became the Northwest ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Business Office manager, a position she held for several decades. Throughout her tenure, Sue worked under 14 different ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø directors and navigated numerous transitions within the campus. Her work was exemplary, as she consistently faced challenges such as budget cuts and complex grant and spending regulations.

Sue's student-focused efforts and her long-term relationships with campus funding partners were well recognized within Northwest ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and the UAF budget teams. Her contributions facilitated countless opportunities for student enrollment and provided reliable support for a variety of campus degree and student support programs, allowing them to thrive and grow. Sue skillfully managed and balanced multimillion-dollar campus budgets while ensuring regional community partners and students were equitably served.

The financial stability of Northwest ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø over the past 37 years can largely be attributed to Sue Luke's expertise, commitment, genuine care, and passion for her work.

Her remarkable 37-year tenure with UAF sets a record for the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø of Indigenous Studies. As she embarks on this new chapter, Sue plans to enjoy a well-deserved vacation and spend more time with her family in Nome. We wish her a wonderful and fulfilling retirement and extend our deepest appreciation for her many extraordinary contributions to our students, our region, our programs, Northwest ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
