Welcome!

OneTree Alaska is a STEAM (STEM + Arts) program affiliated with the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station of the ϳԹ.

OneTree Alaska’s mission is to engage learners of all ages in boreal forest education, citizen science and forest product development. It is centrally concerned with phenology, seasonality and climate change. Phenology is the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate and plant and animal life.

OneTree Alaska STEAM integrated research and citizen science projects are made possible through collaboration with K-12 teachers, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, university students, staff and faculty, and many community partners.

The local boreal forest is our foundation and inspires our work. Please see our recent projects, and share your expertise.

December First Friday

Meet Fairbanks artist Kesler Woodward at OneTree Alaska's First Friday event from 4-7 p.m. on Dec. 5, 2025,  at the OneTree Alaska STEAM Studio, Lola Tilly Commons on the UAF campus.

Woodward's artwork is featured on a set of four greeting cards, sales of which will help underwrite a public screening of the Robert Reich documentary, "The Last Class," on Feb. 1, 2026. This film features Reich in his last semester of teaching public policy students at UC-Berkeley. Reich is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest thought leaders and educators of our time. The screening is in conjunction with KUAC and the UAF School of Education.

Furthering the OneTree mission

OneTree Alaska’s mission is “to engage learners of all ages in boreal forest education, citizen science and forest product development.

To that aim, we have invited Arielle Johnson, author of “Flavorama” to be the keynote speaker of a birch sensory panel workshop on Sept. 28-29. The purpose of this initial invitation-only workshop is to develop birch syrup flavor profiles, the foundation of the inaugural OneTree Birch Syrup Flavor Wheel. We plan to schedule more workshops to build upon these flavor profiles in the future.

You are invited to visit the OneTree Alaska STEAM Studio in the Lola Tilly Commons building to learn more about our research, community outreach and education.
